A Newbery Award winner, this is the story of Kit Tyler, a young orphan girl from the island of Barbados. When her grandfather dies Kit goes to Connecticut to live with her only living relative, her mother's sister. Kit grew up lavished with all the things money could buy. She was free to play and swim on her island. But when she arrived in Puritan Connecticut she was not prepared for what she was about to face. Her aunt, uncle and their daughters are equally frustrated by Kit. Not only does Kit shock them by her worldly dress and attitudes, she is almost useless in a society where hard work is synonymous with survival. Then Kit meets Hannah Tupper, an elderly Quaker lady who lives by Blackbird Pond. Finally, she has found a friend who understands how she feels about being different from those around her and not accepted by her family or neighbors. But Hannah is feared by the villagers. Is she really an old witch--or just a gentle, God-fearing old lady who speaks differently and stays by herself?
